Keep in Shape

Shirley: Hi, Jane, you are a different person now. How’s it going?

Jane: The training is useful, and I learned much about how to keep fit.

Shirley: Really? Tell me about it. You know, I haven’t been to the club for a long time because of the busy work..

Jane: The first thing we should do is to have a healthy diet. The more fruits you eat, the better your skin appears.

Shirley: The same thing with vegetables, right? Everybody seems to know that. There is something else?

Jane: Yeah, I’m not sure you’ve heard that a sound sleep is crucial for fitness.

Shirley: I’ve heard that. Does your trainer tell you anything about staying in a good mood?

Jane: Exactly. A good sense of humor can help your metabolism work better.

Shirley: That’s the same old things. But they are very important, if you wanna achieve your goals.

Jane: Yes, that’s the way to go. It’s also important to do proper exercise.

Shirley: Right, too much or too little wouldn’t be effective. Have you learned anything else?

Jane: There is one. The trainer asks us to buy more skin care products.

Shirley: Are you kidding? My trainer has never said such thing to me. He always advises people against such kind of things.

Jane: But my trainer does. He says women tend to show their age earlier than men. They get wrinkles on their faces easier. So they really need something to delay the process.

Shirley: That makes sense. Following these rules, I think you will be right on your track.

Jane: Yes, right now nothing can stop me!

Job Hunting

Job Hunting is a stressful problem for everyone. Whether someone getting a job right out of school or someone seeking a better position than the one they just left, it is not something that comes easy to most people. However, with preparation and planning, the difficulties can be focused on and the situation can become less stressful. For example, dressing correctly is an important step for any applicant. Also, if you dress correctly, you will feel more confident in your ability to get the job. Men should wear a dress shirt and tie or even a suit if they possess one. Women should wear a suit or other clothing suitable for the occasion. It is better to dress too conservatively than not conservatively enough. Always use honesty as some interviewers will be able to detect problems in your resume. Good manners and correct speech are essential in impressing the interviewer. Remember to smile and shake hands when you meet the interviewer. Make eye contact and answer questions directly and concisely. All of this will also be reflected in your attitude, so that it tells the interviewer that you are a responsible and hardworking person. This mind-set will allow you to know your ownworth with out being too proud of your accomplishments. This is also important when talking about your past working experience and your accomplishments. You do not want to be self-criticizing, but you do not want to be too arrogant of these as well. A proper balance must be struck between the two.

Job Fair

Classmate: What are you doing tomorrow?

Jason: Err…I’m going to a job fair tomorrow.

Classmate: Is that with the American company?

Jason: Yes, that’s right.

Classmate: So where is the work place of that American company?

Jason: Shanghai.

Classmate: That’s great.

Jason: Since you are the experienced one, can you give me some suggestions?

Classmate: You’d better pay more attention to your resume.

Jason: So what should I do?

Classmate: First, you should print your resume on good-quality white paper. Resumes with flowery backgrounds will stand out for all the wrong reasons.

Jason: OK, I got it. Anything more?

Classmate: You’d better get someone to check for spelling and grammatical errors, because a spell-checker won’t pick out every mistake.

Jason: So, can you help me to do this work?

Classmate: Of course, with pleasure. Listen, you should remember that don’t be nervous if the interviewer asks you to do a presentation.

Jason: OK, I will.

There are job fairs taking place nearly every day at colleges throughout the United States. If you request permission, many colleges are willing to allow attendees from outside their college. For safety’s sake, it is always best to check with the sponsoring organization, which is usually the Career Center for the college. If you are from a different geographical region and seeking to relocate to that particular area, most colleges are willing to accommodate your special request to attend. So it there is a job fair at another college, make sure you put it on your schedule. Don’t limit yourself to your college alone-take advantage of all available resources.

Colleague: Oh, yes, indeed. I’ve run out of steam. To be honest, I want to be in a different environment.

Shirley: Is that so?

Colleague: Yes, I don’t want to be stuck in a rut. I want to move on.

Shirley: Have you decided?

Colleague: Yes. I want to get a better job.

Shirley: Could you tell me why you want to quit?

Colleague: I quit just because of the dissatisfying salary and the trouble in getting along with my colleagues.

Shirley: Oh, that’s terrible. Do you want to get a higher salary in our company?

Colleague: I’m afraid not. I’ve promised my girlfriend. We’ll travel southwards to find a job that offers higher pay.

Shirley: OK, I’d like to say that I’ve really enjoyed working with you. However, I think you should work harder for your new job and then you can ask for higher pay.

Colleague: Thank you so much for your advice.

Shirley: And every best wish for your new job.

Reporting

Colleague: Hey, Benjamin, have you finished your report on the project?

Benjamin: Not yet. To tell you the truth, I don’t know how to write it. I’ve considered it for several days.

Colleague: What? Man, you don’t know how to write a project report? That’s sounds a little bit ridiculous.

Benjamin: Don’t laugh at me, please. I’m serious. I’ve never been required to write this kind of report before; I only do the research reports.

Colleague: Oh, sorry, I’ve totally forgotten that you are a workaholic.

Benjamin: So what items must be involved in this report?

Colleague: First is your final conclusion on your work of this year, and then comes your plan for the next year.

Benjamin: Yeah, is that all?

Colleague: Let me see, no, you have to include more details about your final conclusion, for example, your experiences in dealing with some emergent events.

Benjamin: That’s too complicated.

Colleague: And only that doesn’t make a perfect one, you also have to pay attention to the format of the report.

Benjamin: Oh, my God, is there any fixed for mat for it-the one that I just need to fix my information in?

Colleague: I’m sorry. There isn’t. Because different people have to write different kinds of reports.

Benjamin: But I don’t know how to work the Microsoft Words. Could you please give me a hand?

Colleague: OK, no problem. But you have to learn it and then do it yourself next time.

Benjamin: I surely will. Thanks.

Recitation
