Coffee

May: Good afternoon, sir. You are really a regular customer here. May I ask you why you come here so often?

Customer: I’m a newspaper columnist. I write comments for a living. I enjoy working in a coffeehouse.

May: I see. But isn’t it a bit too noisy?

Customer: I don’t mind. By contrast, I quite like the circumstances, as I can see a variety of people here, who can always give me tremendous inspiration. And the most important thing is coffee as it is my life.

May: I can see that. Then what is your favorite coffee?

Customer: Irish coffee is my favorite. But I can drink any other. I’m not particular on it.

May: All right. Would you make coffee yourself when you are at home?

Customer: Not very often. Making coffee is a bit troublesome. Most of the time, I just buy takeout at Starbucks. And also, I quite like instant coffee.

May: I think instant coffee is becoming more and more popular. Though its taste is not perfect, it’s really cheap and convenient.

Customer: Exactly. Nescafe is the world’s favorite coffee. People love it all over the world?

May: Which country makes the best coffee in the world?

Customer: Many people think Brazil makes the best coffee. Brazil exports a lot of coffee. But I love Irish coffee. So it’s hard to say. Just depends on your taste.

May: I agree. I heard in the western countries, almost everyone likes coffee. Is that true?

Customer: Yes. No doubt about that. For us, coffee is more a living style rather than a simple drink. I heard Chinese people don’t drink that much coffee.

May: No, we don’t, especially the old people. But more and more young people fall for coffee.

Customer: I suppose so. That’s probably why there are so many wonderful coffeehouses in China now.

Grandpa: I’m not sure when it started. But I know it’s older than me. As a young boy, I used to eat here a lot.

Daniel: Oh, it’s interesting. Dad told me you brought him here when he was young, too. Now, it’s my turn.

Grandpa: Yeah. We are the VIP customers here. So, what do you want to eat today?

Grandpa: Hey, kid, that’s wrong. It’s a Chinese restaurant. Let’s eat something traditional.

Daniel: Then there is nothing particular I’d like to eat. Grandpa, what’s your favorite here?

Grandpa: The Chinese rice pudding. Your father loves it, too. You wanna try?

Daniel: Sure. Is it sweet?

Grandpa: Yes, of course. But I think they can make you a salty one, too.

Daniel: Great, I want it spicy.

Grandpa: Come on. Don’s go too far.

Daniel: I want it to be special. And you know that I always like hot food.

Grandpa: OK then. We shall ask them to put some red chilli on it.

Daniel: Great. That’s my favorite seat which will be the nearest to the birthday cake.

Western Food and Culture

The culture of food and dining in the West is a little different from that in China. The proper western dinner at a fine restaurant is one of manners, focusing on conversation. You are expected to have knowledge of table manners such as what folk or knife to use as these are essential in western dining. The meal would consist of several courses including a soup or salad, an appetizer, the main dish, and a dessert. The atmosphere will be filled with light music that would only serve as background as people converse with each other. The decorations are usually sparse and are only meant to highlight the atmosphere that is being created by the music. This type of dining is different from the dining experience in most restaurants in China. However, with the increase in internationalism, more restaurants are opening which reflect the more western dining style. The Chinese people, now more affluent and knowledgeable about international customs, are beginning to join in this dining experience. This is not to say that people have given up the deep richness in culture that Chinese food represents. It only means that more choices and tastes are becoming available to population. This represents a significant improvement as it will change the perception that the height of western dining is fast food. As cultural communication expands, knowledge of western food will improve.

Shirley: Why do you want to eat western food so much today? Anything special to celebrate? Did you get a promotion?

Benjamin: Honey, you really forgot about it? Think it over. It’s a candlelight dinner.

Shirley: It’s not your birthday, also not mine. Hey, come on. Just tell me.

Benjamin: It’s our wedding anniversary, honey. How can you forget about it?

Shirley: My dear, tomorrow is our wedding anniversary. We’ve been together for 20 years. But you never change. Always so careless! Do you remember the thing that happened on our wedding day?

Benjamin: Of course. I almost missed my own wedding.

Shirley: Yeah. Do you know that this restaurant used to be the teahouse where we first met?

Benjamin: Oh, really! It looks so different. Our “old place” turns into a brand new place.

Shirley: Do you remember our first date? I got a really special gift.

Benjamin: I can never forget that. I bought you five candies, but I was so anxious that I forgot to give them to you. You didn’t get them until we parted. Then they had already melted down for I held them the whole time.

Shirley: Yeah, it’s really unforgettable. Thank you for making me happy all these years.

Benjamin: You are the one I should thank. You’ve done really great job.

Shirley: Let’s stop saying these things. It’s a wrong time but let’s do the right thing.

Benjamin: Oh, I almost forgot. This is for you. Like it?

Shirley: Oh, a gold necklace! So beautiful. Can you help me to put it on?

Benjamin: Any time. You look gorgeous, honey!

Material 语素
Grape Wine

Grape wine is the second beverage in the international market, only next to beer. At the present, the grape wine already becomes the pronoun of wealth, fashion and personal status. Grape wine is well know to be beneficial to people’s health, but how to choose, drink or store grape wine is a knowledge. There is a wonder: how the grape wine gets its color, since almost all grape juice (even from the black grapes) is basically colorless. The secret is letting the skins soak in the juice during fermentation.

Cheese

Cheese is one of the world’s oldest food products in human history, although no one knows exactly how long people have been eating cheese. Nutrition basically is all about good eating habits, good foods for you, and that includes cheese of course, for it provides protein, essential daily vitamins, and of course energy. If there is one real cheese country in the world, it’s the Netherlands, which is the world’s largest exporter of cheese.
